Most free image tools work by sending your file to a server, which means your photograph — possibly containing faces, documents or location metadata — sits on someone else's infrastructure under terms you did not read. These tools use the browser's own canvas, so the file is processed locally and never transmitted. You can verify this by disconnecting from the network and using them anyway.
Compression is a trade, not a free win
Every quality setting discards information permanently. The compressor shows the resulting file size against the setting so you can find the point where further reduction stops being worth the visible cost, rather than accepting whatever a default produces.
Formats behave differently
PNG preserves transparency and suits flat graphics; JPEG discards detail and suits photographs; WebP usually beats both on size. Converting between them is not neutral — a JPEG saved from a PNG cannot recover transparency, and re-encoding a JPEG compounds its artefacts. The converters note which conversions lose something.
