Most people treat LinkedIn as an online copy of their resume. Recruiters treat it as a search engine. They open LinkedIn Recruiter, type in the skills and titles they need, and work through the ranked results. So the practical question is not "does my profile look nice" — it is "which searches does my profile actually appear in, and how high".
Your headline is the highest-leverage field on the whole profile
By default LinkedIn fills your headline with your current job title, which is the weakest possible use of 220 searchable characters. A headline reading "Marketing Manager" matches far fewer recruiter searches than "Demand Generation Manager | B2B SaaS | HubSpot + Paid Search | 3x pipeline growth". The second version names a specialism, the tools a recruiter would search for, and a result — while still reading naturally to a human.
Write the About section in first person, and front-load it
Only the first two lines show before the "see more" cut, so the hook has to land immediately. Write as "I", not in third person — LinkedIn is a social platform, and third-person bios read oddly there. Aim for roughly 3 to 5 short paragraphs covering what you do, your strongest proof point with a number, the tools and areas you specialise in, and what you are open to. Naming your tools in the About section also feeds the same keyword matching your headline does.
Experience bullets follow the same rules as a resume
Lead with a strong verb, end with a measurable result. "Responsible for the marketing team" tells a recruiter nothing; "Led a 6-person marketing team and grew qualified pipeline 3x in 24 months" gives them something concrete. This is the same principle our free ATS resume checker scores on your resume, and it matters just as much on LinkedIn.
The basics that quietly cost people opportunities
- Skills section — fill all available slots and reorder so your top three are the ones you actually want to be hired for. Recruiters filter on these directly.
- Custom URL — change the default string of numbers to your name. It looks more credible on a resume.
- Photo and banner — profiles with a professional photo get substantially more engagement. It does not need to be a studio shot.
- Open to work — the recruiters-only setting signals availability without telling your current employer.
- Location — set it to the market you want to work in, since recruiters filter heavily by location.
Keep the profile and the resume consistent
Titles, employers and dates should agree, because mismatches are noticed and read as carelessness at best. Everything else can differ: the resume is a tailored, formal document for one specific application, while the profile is a broader, first-person, always-on presence. If you have not rebuilt your resume recently, our free resume builder does it in about ten minutes with ATS-safe layouts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can this tool edit my LinkedIn profile directly?
No — and be wary of any tool that claims it can. LinkedIn does not allow third-party apps to rewrite your profile, so what every optimizer actually does (including the paid ones) is analyse the text you paste and give you improved wording to copy back in yourself. That is exactly what this does, free.
How does LinkedIn recruiter search actually work?
Recruiters use LinkedIn Recruiter to search by keywords, and your headline, About section, job titles and skills all carry weight. A headline that just says your job title matches far fewer searches than one naming your specialism and tools, which is why the headline is scored most heavily here.
How long should my LinkedIn headline be?
You get 220 characters — use most of them. Combine your role, your specialism and the outcome you drive, for example "Demand Generation Manager | B2B SaaS | HubSpot + Paid Search | 3x pipeline growth". Leaving it as the default job title wastes the single most searchable field on your profile.
Is my profile text uploaded anywhere?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server or stored, which is why the tool needs no account.
Should my LinkedIn match my resume exactly?
They should agree on facts — titles, employers and dates — but they serve different purposes. A resume is tailored and formal for one specific role; LinkedIn is broader, written in first person, and works as a always-on profile that recruiters find through search.
