Comparison Beats a Score on Its Own
A standalone site score answers a question nobody actually has. "You scored 74" prompts an immediate follow-up — seventy-four compared to what? A score is only useful next to the scores of the sites competing with you for the same clicks. If your page weight is 1.4MB that sounds heavy, until you find the three sites outranking you are all shipping over 2MB. If your homepage declares no structured data at all, that is worth knowing mainly because every competitor declares four types.
This tool runs the same checks against every site you enter, at the same moment, and lays the results out in one table. The comparison is fair by construction: identical checks, identical parsing, identical scoring weights, all measured within seconds of each other so nobody is being judged on a cached result from last week.
It pairs with our free website audit tool, which goes far deeper on a single site — broken links, Core Web Vitals, a full prioritised fix list. Use the comparison to find out where you are losing ground; use the audit to work out what to do about it on your own site.
Real Measured Signals, Not Opinions
Everything below is read off a live fetch of each page. If a signal cannot be measured on a site, it is marked "not measured" rather than filled in with a zero.
On-page SEO tags
Title tag presence and character length, meta description presence and length, canonical tag, indexability, HTML lang attribute, robots.txt and declared sitemap.
Heading & content depth
How many H1s each page uses, how many H2s support them, total word count on the page, and how many images carry alt text.
Schema & linking
Which Schema.org types each site declares, plus internal and external link counts from the fetched page.
Delivery & weight
HTML transfer size, compression method, cache headers, HTTP status and how many redirect hops sit between the URL you entered and the page that answered.
Security posture
SSL certificate validity and days remaining, plus HSTS, X-Content-Type-Options, X-Frame-Options, Content-Security-Policy and Referrer-Policy headers.
AI gap analysis
The ahead/behind verdicts are calculated in code first. AI only explains those results in plain English and orders them by leverage — it never supplies a number.
What this tool cannot do, stated plainly: it has no access to ranking, traffic, backlink or clickstream data, so it will never tell you what a competitor ranks for or how many visitors they get. Those figures come from paid datasets. Everything reported here is something that can be observed by requesting a page, which is why every number in the report is one you could verify yourself with a browser and developer tools.
Four Sites, One Pass
Enter the URLs
Your site first, then one to three competitors. Every address is validated before any request is made — internal, private and local addresses are refused outright.
All sites are fetched together
Requests run concurrently rather than one after another, so a four-site comparison takes about as long as the slowest single site instead of four times as long.
Identical checks, identical scoring
The same parser and the same scoring weights the website audit uses run against every site, so the scores are directly comparable.
Ahead and behind, then explained
Each signal is compared arithmetically against your best-performing competitor, and only then is the resulting list handed to AI to explain and prioritise.
Once you know where the gap is, the next question is usually what your competitors are writing about that you are not. That is a different measurement, and it has its own tool: the content gap finder crawls their published pages and diffs the topics against yours. Competitor Comparison Questions
What does this competitor comparison actually measure?
It fetches one page from each site you enter — yours and up to three competitors — and parses what comes back. That gives real, verifiable signals: whether a title tag and meta description exist and how long they are, how many H1 and H2 headings the page has, its word count, how many images carry alt text, which Schema.org types are declared, internal and external link counts, the HTML page weight, whether the response is compressed and cached, the SSL certificate status and which security headers are present. Every figure in the report was observed on that fetch. Nothing is modelled or estimated.
Can it tell me what my competitor ranks for?
No, and any tool that claims to do it for free is guessing. Ranking data comes from paid clickstream and SERP-tracking datasets that this tool does not have access to. What it can tell you, factually, is how the two pages are built and configured relative to each other. If you want to see what topics a competitor publishes about, use the content gap finder instead, which crawls their pages and diffs the topics against yours.
How many competitors can I compare at once?
Three, plus your own site, for four total. The cap exists for a practical reason: every site in the comparison is a live network fetch against somebody else's server, and the report is generated inside a single web request rather than being queued. Four concurrent fetches complete comfortably; a dozen would not.
Why is my score different from the full website audit?
The comparison deliberately runs a lighter set of checks so all four sites can be measured at once. It skips the broken-link probe, and Core Web Vitals only appear when a PageSpeed Insights key is configured on this install. Any check that did not run is excluded from the score rather than counted as a failure, so a comparison score is the honest percentage of the checks that could be run on every site equally. For the deepest single-site picture, run the full website audit.
Does comparing a competitor affect their site in any way?
No. The tool makes ordinary read-only GET requests — the same thing any browser or search crawler does — using a clearly identified user agent. It requests the homepage, robots.txt and nothing else, and it never submits forms, follows checkout flows or writes anything anywhere.
Which competitors should I pick?
Pick the sites that actually outrank you for the searches you care about, not the businesses you consider rivals commercially. Those two lists overlap less than people expect. Search two or three of your most valuable queries in an incognito window, take the domains that appear above you, and enter those. Comparing against a national brand with a hundred-person marketing team tells you very little you can act on.
Is the AI writing the comparison making up numbers?
It cannot. The ahead and behind verdicts are computed arithmetically in code from the measured values before the AI sees anything, and the AI is given only those already-decided results to explain. Its output is then re-checked and any sentence naming a domain that was not part of the comparison is discarded rather than shown.
How often should I re-run a comparison?
Quarterly is enough for most sites, or straight after either party ships a redesign. The signals measured here — markup, schema, headers, page weight — change when someone deploys, not day to day, so running it weekly mostly produces noise.
