How to Read an A/B Resume Comparison

The reason to compare two versions rather than simply scoring the new one is that a rewrite almost never improves a document uniformly. You tighten the bullets and accidentally cut the only number in the summary. You add quantification and push three bullets past the length where anyone still reads them. A single score hides that; a per-criterion comparison shows it, and shows it in the one place where you can still act on it.

Look at the criteria before you look at the total

A four-point gap tells you very little on its own. Where those four points came from tells you a great deal. Gains in achievement focus or quantified evidence are substantive: they mean the document now makes claims a reader can check. Gains in end punctuation or date formatting mean the document is tidier, which is worth having but will not change anyone's mind. Two versions can sit two points apart while one of them is a materially stronger case for hiring you.

Expect the answer to be "take some of each"

When your rewrite is ahead on some criteria and behind on others, that is not a failure of the comparison — it is the most useful thing it can tell you. The verdict names which parts of which version to keep. In practice this usually means taking the newer version as the base and pulling back the specific summary sentence, or the one bullet with the good number in it, that got lost in the edit.

Use the diff to catch what you did not mean to do

The diff pairs a removed line with the line that replaced it wherever the two are recognisably the same bullet, so an edit shows as one changed row instead of a deletion and an unrelated-looking insertion. It is worth reading even when the scores agree with you: the most common thing it catches is a genuinely strong, specific line that was dropped during a tidy-up because it was the longest one on the page.

What this comparison does not measure

It compares writing quality, and only that. It has no view on which version fits a particular job, because it has not been shown the job. If you are choosing between a generic resume and one tailored to a specific posting, run each of them through the free ATS resume checker with that job description pasted in — keyword and requirement match is measured there, not here. It also cannot judge whether the achievement you chose to lead with is the right one for the role, which remains a judgement call for someone who knows your field.

A sensible loop

Run your current resume through the single-resume review first and work down the prioritised fix list. Save that as your version B, then compare it against the original here. If a criterion went backwards, you will see exactly which one and can put back what you lost. When both versions are strong, rebuild the winner in a clean single-column template with the free resume builder and check the layout with the ATS checker before you send it. For a non-commercial second opinion on the writing conventions themselves, the Purdue OWL resume guide is a reliable reference, and the National Careers Service guide to CV sections covers the UK conventions, which differ from the US ones in several places.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the A/B compare actually tell me?

Three things. Each version gets its own score out of 100 across the same eight criteria. A table shows the two side by side so you can see which criteria moved and by how much. And a line-by-line diff shows exactly what changed between them, including lines that were edited rather than added or removed. The verdict names the winner and the criteria the gap comes from, because "version B scored four points higher" is not on its own a reason to send version B.

What if each version is better in different places?

That is the common outcome, and the tool says so rather than hiding it behind a single number. When each version is ahead on criteria the other is behind on, you are told which parts of which version to keep, because the best document is usually a merge of the two rather than either one as it stands.

Is this free, and do I need an account?

Free, unlimited, and no account. No email capture, no card, nothing held back. The same is true of the single-resume review, the builder, all 28 templates and every download format.

What happens to the two versions I paste in?

They are sent to our server, compared in that one request, and gone once the result comes back. Nothing is written to a database, nothing is logged, and there is no account to attach them to. Uploaded files are converted to text and the temporary file is deleted in the same request. We say this plainly rather than claiming your file never leaves your device, because for an upload that would not be true.

Can I compare a tailored version against my generic one?

Yes, and that is one of the more useful ways to use it. Bear in mind that this tool scores writing quality, not fit for a particular job — a version tailored to one posting may score the same as your generic one while being far more likely to succeed for that role. To measure fit against a specific posting, use the ATS checker with the job description pasted in.

How big a difference in score is meaningful?

Treat anything under about three points as noise and look at the criteria instead. A five to ten point gap concentrated in achievement focus or quantified evidence is a real, substantive improvement. A gap of the same size spread thinly across formatting criteria usually means you tidied the document rather than strengthened it.
