The unit price is the only number that makes different-sized offers comparable, and it is almost never the number printed largest.
The Bigger Pack Is Not Always Cheaper Per Unit
This is the whole point of the tool, so it belongs before anything else. There is a widespread assumption that pack size and value move together: buy the big one, save money. It is true often enough to feel like a rule, and false often enough to cost real money over a year of shopping.
The defaults loaded above show it. A 500 g pouch at $4.20 works out at $8.40 per kilogram. A 1 kg box at $7.60 is $7.60 per kilogram. A 2 kg sack at $16.40 — the biggest pack, the one that looks like the bulk buy — is $8.20 per kilogram. The middle size wins, and the largest pack is more expensive per kilogram than the size below it. Nothing about the shelf display would tell you that.
There are ordinary reasons this happens. The mid-size pack is frequently the one on promotion, because it is the size most households buy. Large packs carry packaging and shipping costs that do not scale down neatly, and some large formats are aimed at buyers who value fewer trips over the lowest price. Prices are also updated at different times for different lines, so a temporary inversion can sit on a shelf for weeks. Whatever the cause, the only defence is to check rather than assume.
What This Calculator Does
It converts every row you enter into a common base — grams for weight, millilitres for volume, individual items for counted goods — divides the price by that quantity, and then reports the result on a familiar basis: per kilogram, per litre, or per item. It ranks the rows, names the cheapest, names the most expensive, and expresses the gap between them both as a percentage premium and as money per unit.
The bar breakdown underneath the grid shows every pack on the same scale, so the shape of the pricing is visible at a glance. When one option is dramatically out of line, you see it before you read a single number. When three options are within a cent of each other, you see that too, and you can stop optimising and buy whichever one suits your storage space.
Rows can be added and removed freely. Comparing six or seven options across two brands is where the tool earns its keep, because that is exactly where mental arithmetic gives up.
How to Use It
- Name each option so the result is readable. "Store brand 1 kg" is more useful than "Pack 2" when the answer comes back.
- Enter the pack size and choose its unit. Use whatever the label says — grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, millilitres, litres, fluid ounces, gallons, or a plain count of items.
- Enter the price you would actually pay for that pack, after any discount that applies to it and before any promotion that does not.
- Add a row for every option you are weighing up, including the one you would buy by default. The default is what you are comparing against.
- Press Compare to rank them by unit price and see how much the worst option costs you per kilogram, litre or item.
The Formula: How Unit Price Is Calculated
Unit price is price divided by quantity, expressed on a consistent basis: unit price = pack price ÷ pack quantity in base units. The only complication is making the quantities comparable before dividing, which is where mixed units cause trouble.
Weights convert to grams first: 1 kg is 1,000 g, one ounce is 28.3495 g, one pound is 453.592 g. Volumes convert to millilitres: 1 litre is 1,000 ml, one US fluid ounce is 29.5735 ml, one US gallon is 3,785.41 ml. Counted goods need no conversion. The calculator then multiplies back up to a readable basis so you are not reading a price per gram to five decimal places — $0.0076 per gram becomes $7.60 per kilogram, which is a number you can hold in your head.
The percentage premium compares the worst row against the best: premium = (worst unit price ÷ best unit price − 1) × 100. In the default example that is (8.40 ÷ 7.60 − 1) × 100, or 10.5%. Mixed Units, and When a Comparison Is Not Valid
Grams against kilograms is a conversion. Grams against millilitres is not — those are different physical quantities, and converting between them requires the density of the specific substance, which the calculator does not know and will not guess. If you enter a mix of weight and volume rows, the tool compares within the family that most of your rows belong to and tells you which rows it set aside, rather than producing a confident-looking number that means nothing.
This matters in real aisles more than it sounds. Honey, yoghurt, cooking oil and cleaning liquids are variously sold by weight in one format and by volume in another, and a 500 g jar and a 500 ml bottle are not the same amount of product. Oil is lighter than water and honey is heavier, so the direction of the error changes by category. Count is its own family too. Comparing a 12-pack of drinks against a 2-litre bottle only works if you convert the pack to volume yourself — twelve 330 ml cans is 3,960 ml — and enter it that way.
Discounts, Multibuys and the Price You Actually Pay
Enter the effective price, not the ticket price. A "buy two, get one free" offer on a $6 pack means three packs for $12, so the pack price for comparison purposes is $4 and the quantity is one pack. A percentage discount applies to the pack price directly. A "spend $50 save $10" threshold is harder, because the saving is spread across a basket rather than attached to one item, and forcing it into a unit price will distort the comparison — leave those out and treat them as a basket-level saving instead.
Multibuys deserve suspicion in particular. A multibuy that only pays off if you buy three, on a product you will use one of before it expires, is not a saving. The unit price of food you throw away is infinite. Work out the effective price with the discount calculator first, then bring the honest number back here, and only count the packs you will genuinely use.
Taxes are the other adjustment. If prices in your region are displayed before tax and the tax rate differs between product categories, compare tax-inclusive prices — the sales tax calculator converts them — otherwise you are comparing two numbers built on different bases.
Where Unit Price Is the Wrong Question
The cheapest unit price is only the best decision if you consume everything you buy. Perishables, products that degrade once opened, and anything you have nowhere to store all break that assumption. Buying 5 kg of something at a 12% lower unit price and discarding a third of it is a worse outcome than buying 1 kg twice.
Cash flow is a genuine constraint too, not a failure of discipline. A larger pack ties up money now for a saving realised over months, and when a weekly budget is tight the smaller pack can be the correct choice even at a higher unit price. Quality sits outside this arithmetic entirely. Unit price compares quantity, not what is in the pack. Concentrated detergent at twice the price per litre may be cheaper per wash, and per wash is the unit that matters — so enter loads rather than litres and let the tool compare those.
Choosing the Unit That Matches the Job
The most common mistake in unit pricing is comparing on a unit that does not correspond to how the product gets used. Paper towels priced per roll hide the fact that rolls contain different sheet counts and sheets differ in size; the comparable unit is sheets, or better, area. Coffee priced per kilogram ignores that some beans are used at a higher dose. The fix is the same in every case: decide what one use costs, then enter the number of uses as the quantity and the pack price as the price. The calculator does not care whether the unit is a gram, a wash, a page or a serving. It only needs the quantity and the price to describe the same thing.
Regulators have taken the same view. Unit pricing on shelf labels exists precisely because pack sizes are not comparable by eye, and the standards behind it — including the model regulations published by the NIST Office of Weights and Measures in the United States — set out how quantities must be declared and which units may be used. The underlying definitions of the units themselves are maintained by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.
Reading the Percentage Premium Properly
A 10.5% premium on a single grocery item is a rounding error on one shopping trip. The reason to care is repetition. A product bought weekly, at 10% above the best available unit price, costs a tenth more every week for as long as the habit lasts, and habits around staples are unusually durable — people buy the same pack size for years without re-checking it.
The premium figure is also the right way to decide whether the comparison is worth the effort. If the gap between best and worst is under two or three per cent, the options are effectively priced the same and any of them is fine. If the gap is twenty per cent or more, something structural is going on — a promotion, a pack-size change, a premium format — and it is worth understanding before you commit to a habit.
