What This Screen Time Cost Calculator Does

It performs four conversions. Daily hours become annual hours. Annual hours become full 24-hour days, which is a more intuitive scale once the number grows large. Annual hours multiply by an hourly rate you choose to give a monetary equivalent. And the daily figure minus a reduction you specify shows what the annual total would be at the lower rate — the sensitivity, in other words, of the annual number to a small daily change.

The hourly rate is entirely yours to set. It might be your pay rate, a freelance rate, or a figure you attach to your own leisure time. Set it to zero and the money figures disappear, leaving a pure time conversion. There is no default assumption about what an hour of anyone's time is worth.

How to Use It

The Formula: Daily Hours to Annual Days

The arithmetic is straightforward and worth writing out because the scale change is where the number becomes interesting. Annual hours are daily hours × days per week × 52. At 3.5 hours a day, seven days a week, that is 3.5 × 7 × 52 = 1,274 hours a year.

Converting to full days divides by 24: 1,274 ÷ 24 = 53.1 days. That is the figure that surprises people, because a day of screen time here means a complete 24-hour day, sleep included — 53 of them out of 365. Converting to working weeks instead divides by 40, giving 31.9 weeks, which is roughly three quarters of a working year.

The monetary figure multiplies annual hours by the rate: 1,274 × $30 = $38,220 a year. Over five years the projection is 6,370 hours, or 265 full days. Reducing the daily average by one hour drops the annual figure to 910 hours — a 364-hour difference, which is over fifteen full days from a change of sixty minutes a day.

What the Dollar Figure Does and Does Not Mean

The monetary output is an opportunity-cost framing, and it is worth being precise about its limits. It says: if every one of those hours could have been sold at your stated rate, this is what they would have fetched. That condition is almost never true. Nobody can convert arbitrary hours into paid work at will, most people cannot work materially more hours than they already do, and leisure time has value that a wage rate does not capture.

So the number is best read as a scale indicator rather than a loss. It answers "how large is this block of time, expressed in a unit I have intuition for" — and money is a unit most people have strong intuition for. It does not answer "how much money am I losing", and presenting it that way would be dishonest.

Measuring Screen Time Consistently

The largest source of error in this calculation is the input, not the arithmetic. Device-reported screen time counts differently across platforms. Some count any period the display is on; some count only foreground app use; some count audio playing with the screen off and some do not. A phone report and a laptop report added together may double-count time when both are in use.

Self-reported estimates are less reliable still, and typically diverge from measured figures in both directions depending on the activity. If you want a number you can compare over time, use one measurement source and keep the definition fixed rather than combining sources.

National statistics agencies face the same measurement problem and handle it with structured time diaries rather than device logs. The American Time Use Survey, run by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, asks respondents to account for a full day in sequence, which avoids the recall bias of asking "how many hours do you spend on X". Its published annual results consistently identify watching television as the leisure activity Americans spend the most time on. If you want to compare your own figure to a population, that is the source to use — with the caveat that its categories are activity-based rather than device-based, so they do not map cleanly onto a phone's screen time report.

Separating Work Screen Time From Everything Else

A single screen-time number mixes categories that have nothing in common. Eight hours at a screen because that is where the job happens is not the same quantity as three hours of video in the evening, and adding them produces a total that supports no useful comparison. If your work is screen-based, the honest approach is to run this calculator twice with the two figures separated.

The distinction also changes what the hourly rate means. Work screen hours are already being paid for, so applying a rate to them double-counts. Non-work hours are the ones where an opportunity-cost framing makes any sense at all. This tool measures time, not money spent on services. The two are related but independent: a subscription costing $15 a month costs the same whether you use it for one hour or a hundred. Combining the two gives a cost per hour of use, which is a genuinely informative figure for deciding whether a subscription earns its place. A service costing $180 a year and used for 200 hours costs $0.90 an hour. The same service used for 12 hours costs $15 an hour. Neither number tells you what to do, but the second is a much easier fact to act on than "I have a streaming subscription".

Annual totals are large and static; they tend to prompt a reaction rather than a decision. The sensitivity figure — what the annual number becomes if the daily average shifts by an hour — is more useful because it is denominated in something you can actually evaluate.
