Paragraph one: licence, tickets and availability

Name the role, then your licence class and current certifications, then when you can start. A contractor reading this is checking whether you are legally able to do the work and whether you are free. Everything else can wait for paragraph two.

Paragraph two: the work, at scale, done safely

Give one job you can describe concretely: what it was, how big, how long it took and how it went. Add your safety record if it is good. Contractors are buying reliability and competence, and a specific job is more persuasive than any adjective.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, the type of work the company takes on, or its safety record — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

What this field is judging behind the words

Wind sites will not put an untrained person up a tower, so safety training status is checked before skills. After that, employers look at the platforms and ratings you have worked on and how far your fault-finding goes, because a technician who can close a converter or pitch fault from a SCADA alarm is worth far more than one who only completes scheduled service. Travel and rotation availability are asked early, as most field service work moves between sites.

Mistakes that cost wind turbine technician candidates

• Listing safety training without expiry dates, when refreshers are the first thing a site checks
• Naming turbine counts but not platforms, ratings or the systems you actually troubleshot
• Describing yourself only as a climber, which reads as a helper rather than a technician

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

Global Wind Organisation Basic Safety Training is the industry reference, covering working at height, first aid, manual handling and fire awareness, with rescue and technical modules added by many employers. Refresher intervals apply, so dates matter. OSHA 10 or 30 General Industry is common, and electrical safety, lockout/tagout and confined space training are set by regulation and employer procedure. Some owners require their own platform-specific qualification before unsupervised work.

Technician I through III, then lead technician, site supervisor or travelling troubleshooter on major component work. Further moves go into commissioning, reliability engineering support, SCADA analysis or training and safety roles.
