The job I would point to first is that I price 45 to 60 bids a year across school, office and light industrial work, maintaining a 24% hit rate. The work I run day to day covers Quantity Takeoff, Hard Bid Estimating and Conceptual Estimating, which is what your posting describes. I have attached my resume, which sets out the rest in the same terms.

Adapting this for a construction estimator application
Paragraph one: licence, tickets and availability
Name the role, then your licence class and current certifications, then when you can start. A contractor reading this is checking whether you are legally able to do the work and whether you are free. Everything else can wait for paragraph two.
Paragraph two: the work, at scale, done safely
Give one job you can describe concretely: what it was, how big, how long it took and how it went. Add your safety record if it is good. Contractors are buying reliability and competence, and a specific job is more persuasive than any adjective.
Paragraph three: why this employer
This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, the type of work the company takes on, or its safety record — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.
What this field is judging behind the words
Chief estimators ask three things: how many bids you turn out, how many you win, and how your awarded jobs performed against your numbers. Sector matters, since public bid work, negotiated work and design-build each price differently. They will want to know which trades you take off yourself and which you buy out, because self-performed takeoff is the harder skill. A takeoff exercise as part of interview is common.
Mistakes that cost construction estimator candidates
- Giving no bid volume or hit rate, which leaves nothing measurable on the page
- Not saying which trades you take off yourself versus which you buy out
- Omitting estimate-to-actual accuracy, the figure a chief estimator asks about first
Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

The recognised certifications are the American Society of Professional Estimators Certified Professional Estimator and the AACE International Certified Estimating Professional, with the AACE Certified Cost Professional covering broader cost engineering. A construction management or engineering degree is common but not required. Software proficiency in takeoff and estimating packages is expected and should be named.

Estimator to senior estimator to chief estimator, then preconstruction manager or director. The route into business development and project executive roles is well established, since both depend on understanding how work is bought.

Check every certification date is current before you send anything, since these are verified and an expired ticket ends the application.
