A postdoc is usually a single principal investigator decision against a funded aim, which makes it far quicker than a faculty search, often four to eight weeks. Certification and clearance requirements
A completed doctorate, or one submitted with a defence date, is the threshold, and some posts require the degree in hand before the start date. Ethics and compliance training is mandatory where the work involves human participants, animals or controlled materials, most commonly through the CITI Program. Visa sponsorship, laboratory safety and responsible conduct of research training are handled at appointment.
What a principal checks first
The first pass is an eligibility check against the vacancy. Certification area, grade band and state decide whether your file can be considered at all, and a screener working through a stack during a hiring window will not reconstruct them from your job history.
Evidence of student learning
Education hiring is increasingly data-conscious, and the strongest bullets connect what you did to what students achieved: growth measures, pass rates, attendance, behaviour referrals, programme participation. Attribute honestly, note the cohort size, and include the initiatives you led beyond your own classroom, since those are what distinguish candidates with similar teaching records.
The summary, and leading with certification
Open with your certification area, grade band and state, because that determines whether you are eligible for the vacancy at all. Everything else in the summary should point at student outcomes rather than teaching philosophy — philosophy belongs in the interview, where you can be asked about it.
Mistakes that cost postdoctoral researcher candidates interviews
- Sending a resume rather than a CV, so the publication list and technical detail the hiring PI needs never appear
- Describing your doctoral work in thesis chapters instead of in the methods and questions the advertised project uses
- Listing every co-authored paper without indicating your contribution, which makes a strong record read as ambiguous

District postings are formulaic but district priorities are not.
