What a foreman looks at first
The first pass answers two practical questions: can you legally do this work, and are you free to start. A foreman with a job beginning next week reads for the licence, the current tickets and the availability, and everything else on the page waits behind those.
Licences, tickets and safety training
There is no single national licence for industrial maintenance. Employers rely on apprenticeship or associate programmes, plus credentials such as NCCER industrial maintenance modules and the SMRP Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician. OSHA 10 or 30 General Industry is widely expected, and site-specific training in lockout/tagout, arc flash, confined space and powered industrial trucks is set by regulation and employer procedure rather than by any one certificate.
How you actually get hired for this
Plants hire maintenance technicians against a downtime problem, so the resume is read for the machines and lines you kept running rather than for job titles. Multi-craft ability carries a premium, because a technician who can follow a fault from the mechanical drive into the motor control and the PLC input saves a callout. Interviews are practical and often include a print, a fault scenario and questions about how you approach a line-down call.
What you built, at what scale, safely
Describe the work in the units the trade uses: square footage, linear feet, tonnage, service calls per day, machines run, crew size. Add safety record and callback rate if you have them, because on a job site those are worth as much as speed. If you have run a crew or trained apprentices, say so plainly — that is the difference between a hand and a lead.
Mistakes that cost industrial maintenance technician candidates interviews
- Listing "general maintenance" without naming the machines, lines or systems you owned
- Leaving out downtime, MTTR or PM completion numbers when the plant tracks all three
- Hiding electrical capability, which is the difference between two pay grades in most plants
The top of the page: licence, tickets and what you can run
A foreman reading this has a job starting Monday. Put your licence class, your certifications with their dates, and the equipment you can operate at the very top — above the work history — because that is the information that decides whether you get the call. Save the paragraph-style summary for one or two lines at most.

Helper to technician to senior or lead technician, then maintenance planner, reliability technician, supervisor or maintenance manager. Planning and reliability routes suit people who like data; supervision suits people who like scheduling crews and outages.
