Paragraph one: credential, setting and population

State the role, your licence and its status, and the setting and patient population you work in. A clinical manager is deciding whether you can be oriented onto their unit rather than trained from scratch, and that judgement is made in the first two lines.

Paragraph two: one clinical result you can stand behind

Choose an outcome you can evidence — a patient load carried, a documentation or compliance improvement, a quality measure your unit moved — and be careful to attribute team results as team results. Overstating a clinical outcome is the fastest way to lose credibility with a manager who knows how the work runs.

What this field is judging behind the words

Recruiters at agencies screen fast and in volume, and facilities interview briefly because the contract is short. What decides it is whether you can take a full assignment quickly, which is why specialty consistency and EHR familiarity matter more than variety. Extensions and repeat bookings are the strongest signal available, since a facility that wanted you back has already answered the reference question.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a service line or a quality programme the organisation is known for — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost travel nurse candidates

• Listing each 13-week contract as a separate employer, which triggers job-hopping filters
• Not stating licence type, when compact status is often what makes a start date possible
• Leaving off bed counts, ratios and unit types for each facility, so nothing is comparable

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

A current registered nurse licence is required, and multi-state practice through the Nurse Licensure Compact depends on your primary state of residence participating; non-compact states require separate licences that take time to obtain. BLS is universal, with ACLS, PALS and specialty certifications required by unit. Agencies also require up-to-date immunisation and health records before a start date.

Where this leads if you get it

Contract nursing to higher-paying crisis or specialty assignments, then permanent placement at a facility you have travelled to. Some move into agency recruitment or clinical liaison roles, or into interim leadership contracts once they have charge experience.

Check the licence number and expiry date on both documents before sending, because a lapsed credential ends an application regardless of the letter.
