State the role, your licence and its status, and the setting and patient population you work in. A clinical manager is deciding whether you can be oriented onto their unit rather than trained from scratch, and that judgement is made in the first two lines.

Choose an outcome you can evidence — a patient load carried, a documentation or compliance improvement, a quality measure your unit moved — and be careful to attribute team results as team results. Overstating a clinical outcome is the fastest way to lose credibility with a manager who knows how the work runs.

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a service line or a quality programme the organisation is known for — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Departments hire on accuracy under time pressure, because a missing instrument delays a theatre and everyone hears about it. Interviews cover count sheets, immediate-use sterilisation, how you handle a failed biological indicator and what you do when theatre demands a tray early. Experience with orthopaedic, spine and robotic sets is the strongest single differentiator.

Mistakes that cost sterile processing technician candidates

• Describing the work as "cleaning instruments", which understates the technical judgement involved
• Omitting the sterilisation methods you have actually operated
• Leaving out tray volumes, which is the only productivity figure a department manager can compare

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

Certification is offered by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association and by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution. A growing number of states require certification for this work, but the requirement is not universal and timelines differ, so state and employer rules should both be checked.
