Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible

Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it spends a sentence saying nothing.

Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number

Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

What this field is judging behind the words

Interviews are dominated by design discussion: you are handed a business problem and expected to reason aloud, ask clarifying questions and defend choices under challenge. Employers also test presence, since the role involves briefing executives and disagreeing with senior people constructively. Many processes include a stakeholder scenario. Depth still matters — architects who cannot discuss implementation detail lose credibility quickly with the engineers involved.

Mistakes that cost solutions architect candidates

• Describing diagrams instead of decisions; the reasoning is the deliverable
• Going entirely abstract — reviewers still want to know what you can build with your own hands
• Claiming a design succeeded without saying what it cost or what had to be revisited later

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

Requirements vary by employer type. Cloud provider professional-level architect certifications are frequently requested, and consultancies with partner status may require them. TOGAF appears mainly in enterprise architecture functions and large organisations rather than product companies. A long delivery record generally outweighs any certificate, but the certificates do open recruiter conversations.

Where this leads if you get it

Architects almost always come from senior engineering or lead roles. From solutions architect the routes are enterprise architect, principal architect, pre-sales architecture in vendor organisations, or CTO in a smaller company. Some return to hands-on engineering deliberately, finding the document-heavy end of the work unsatisfying.
