Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible

Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it spends a sentence saying nothing.

Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number

Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.

What this field is judging behind the words

SRE loops typically add two rounds that ordinary software interviews skip: a troubleshooting scenario where you debug a failing system live, and an operational design question about monitoring, capacity or failure modes. Expect to be asked about the worst incident you handled, in detail, including the part where you got it wrong. Teams are hiring judgement under pressure, and the resume that names one specific outage tends to steer the whole conversation.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost site reliability engineer candidates

• Presenting yourself as a monitoring tool operator; SREs are hired to change system behaviour, not to watch graphs
• Omitting on-call rotation details — interviewers want to know the size of the rota and the page volume you lived with
• Claiming uptime numbers for a whole company when you owned three of its forty services

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

No licence exists and no certification is required. Kubernetes certifications such as the CKA and cloud DevOps certifications are the ones occasionally listed in postings, mostly as a filter at larger organisations. A computer science or engineering degree is common; a background in systems administration or network operations transfers well and is frequently how people arrive in the role.

Where this leads if you get it

Most SREs come from either software engineering or operations, and the two arrive with opposite gaps. From senior, paths run to staff SRE, reliability architecture, or leading a platform group. Depth in one hard area — networking, databases, or performance — tends to define seniority more than years served.
