Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible

Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it spends a sentence saying nothing.

Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number

Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.

What this field is judging behind the words

Expect an Apex exercise, questions on bulkification and governor limits, and a judgement scenario asking whether a requirement should be built declaratively or in code — answering "Apex" too readily is a common failure. Consultancies also assess client communication. Enterprise employers probe integration experience, because connecting Salesforce to ERP and finance systems is where most of the genuine complexity in these projects sits.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost salesforce developer candidates

• Quoting test coverage percentages achieved through assertion-free filler tests, which experienced reviewers ask about directly
• Reaching for Apex in examples where Flow would have been the right answer
• Leaving out integration work, which is where most enterprise Salesforce complexity actually lives

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

Platform Developer I is effectively expected, with Platform Developer II and the architect track marking senior candidates. As with the administrator path, credentials need maintenance exams to remain current. Traditional computer science degrees are welcome but the ecosystem is full of successful developers who came through the administrator route and Trailhead rather than university.

Where this leads if you get it

Common routes in are from administrator work or from general software development. Advancement runs to senior developer, technical architect, and eventually the CTA track, which is demanding and highly regarded. Consultancy and contracting are unusually well established in this ecosystem compared with most platform specialisms.
