Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible

Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it spends a sentence saying nothing.

Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number

Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

What this field is judging behind the words

Rust openings are fewer than the interest in them, so competition per role is high and the bar is set accordingly. Interviews typically probe ownership, borrowing and concurrency reasoning directly, then move to systems design questions tied to the product. Take-homes are common and often substantial. Many roles sit in infrastructure, embedded, cryptocurrency or performance-critical backend work, and each of those subsectors screens for different domain knowledge alongside the language itself.

Mistakes that cost rust developer candidates

• Presenting side projects as the whole case when the posting is for production systems work
• Skipping the performance numbers, which are the entire argument for choosing Rust in the first place
• Hiding the C, C++ or Go years that preceded the Rust ones; that background is what makes the Rust credible

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

There is no Rust certification and no plausible prospect of one mattering. Degrees in computer science or engineering are common in the systems roles Rust occupies but are regularly waived for strong open source work. Crate authorship, contributions to well-known projects, and readable public code function as the real credential in this community more strongly than in most.

Where this leads if you get it

Most Rust developers arrive from C, C++, Go or Python rather than starting there. Progression runs towards senior and staff systems engineering, with specialisation into embedded, blockchain infrastructure or performance-critical platform work.
