Adapting this for a reading specialist application
Paragraph one: certification area and level
Name the position, the school, and your certification area and grade band. Districts run multiple vacancies at once and the letter is often read next to the application form, so being specific about which vacancy you mean prevents your file being read against the wrong one.
Paragraph two: one thing students achieved
Pick a measurable student outcome or a programme you built, and give the cohort size. Panels are looking for evidence that your practice changes results rather than a description of your teaching style, which they will ask about in person anyway.
What this field is judging behind the words
Structured literacy legislation in many states has reshaped these posts and made the training you hold the decisive factor. Interviews are run by a principal with a curriculum director present, and they ask you to read a set of screening results and say what you would do. Coaching is examined as closely as intervention, because districts are buying improvement to core instruction, not only a withdrawal group.
Paragraph three: why this employer
This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a programme the school runs or a community it serves — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.
Mistakes that cost reading specialist candidates
- Saying "literacy intervention" without naming the approaches and assessments you are trained in
- Presenting a classroom teacher resume when the post requires a separate specialist credential
- Reporting caseload size with no indication of what changed for those pupils
