Paragraph one: credential, setting and population

State the role, your licence and its status, and the setting and patient population you work in. A clinical manager is deciding whether you can be oriented onto their unit rather than trained from scratch, and that judgement is made in the first two lines.

Paragraph two: one clinical result you can stand behind

Choose an outcome you can evidence — a patient load carried, a documentation or compliance improvement, a quality measure your unit moved — and be careful to attribute team results as team results. Overstating a clinical outcome is the fastest way to lose credibility with a manager who knows how the work runs.

What this field is judging behind the words

Radiation oncology departments hire slowly and carefully, because errors are consequential and orientation is long. Managers look at machine vendor, treatment techniques and the oncology information system together, since a therapist who knows the platform is productive far sooner. Interviews commonly probe how you handle a setup that does not match the plan and when you would stop and escalate.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a service line or a quality programme the organisation is known for — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost radiation therapist candidates

• Saying "delivered radiation treatments" without machine, technique or daily patient volume attached
• Leaving out the record and verify system, which is a genuine training cost the department has to absorb
• Ignoring simulation experience when many departments rotate therapists through sim and expect both

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

The route is an accredited radiation therapy programme at associate or bachelor level, followed by ARRT certification and registration in radiation therapy. Many states separately license or credential radiation therapists and requirements differ, so check the state you are applying in. Basic Life Support is a standard employer requirement.

Where this leads if you get it

Senior therapist, then chief therapist or clinical coordinator. Some move into dosimetry through an accredited programme, and others into applications and training roles with equipment manufacturers.
