Product Manager Cover Letter Example
A worked example for a product manager application, built on the same three-paragraph structure that works in every field — and tuned to what this one actually screens for.

I am applying for the Product Manager position at Northbridge Software. I have spent 8 years in this field, most recently as Senior Product Manager, and the work described in your posting is close to what I do now.
The result I would point to first is that I redesigned the self-serve onboarding flow after 40 user interviews, lifting 14 day activation from 22 percent to 41 percent. Day to day my work centres on Product discovery, Roadmap prioritisation and A/B testing, which maps directly onto what this role calls for. I have attached my resume, which sets out the rest in the same terms.

How to adapt this for your own application
The structure above is doing the work, not the wording. Replace every specific with your own and the letter still holds together — that is the point of keeping it to three paragraphs.
Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible
Name the exact job title and where you saw it. Then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it uses a sentence to say nothing.
Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number
Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of. Attach a figure to it: a percentage, a dollar amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result is worth more than three general claims, and it gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.
Paragraph three: why this employer
This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone, and it reads as filler. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.
Mistakes that cost product manager candidates
- Describing yourself as the voice of the customer without a single interview count, survey size or research artefact
- Listing ceremonies such as standups, grooming and retros as though facilitation is the job rather than the overhead of it
- Claiming credit for whole product revenue when you owned one surface, which falls apart in the first interview drill down
Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

Product Manager Cover Letter Questions
What should a product manager cover letter say?
Three short paragraphs. First, the role you are applying for and why you are a credible candidate. Second, your single strongest relevant achievement with a number attached. Third, one genuine reason you want this particular employer, then a brief close. Anything longer than one page usually goes unread.
How long should it be?
Roughly 250 to 350 words on a single page. Recruiters skim cover letters in seconds, so the discipline of three paragraphs forces you to lead with what actually matters rather than restating your resume.
Should I repeat my resume in the cover letter?
No. The resume already lists what you did. The letter exists to answer the two questions a list cannot: why this role, and why this employer. Pick the one achievement most relevant to the posting and give it context.
Do I still need a cover letter for product manager roles?
When the application asks for one, always include it, since incomplete applications are often filtered before anyone reads them. When it is optional, it is still worth writing for competitive roles, career changes and employment gaps, where a resume alone handles the context badly.
Can I copy this example?
Use the structure and the way each paragraph does its job, but write your own content. The employer and candidate here are fictional, and a letter describing work you did not do will not survive an interview.
