Paragraph one: credential, setting and population

State the role, your licence and its status, and the setting and patient population you work in. A clinical manager is deciding whether you can be oriented onto their unit rather than trained from scratch, and that judgement is made in the first two lines.

Paragraph two: one clinical result you can stand behind

Choose an outcome you can evidence — a patient load carried, a documentation or compliance improvement, a quality measure your unit moved — and be careful to attribute team results as team results. Overstating a clinical outcome is the fastest way to lose credibility with a manager who knows how the work runs.

Paediatric managers hire for family communication as much as clinical skill, because a parent who does not trust the nurse makes every task harder. Interviews commonly ask how you would explain a procedure to a frightened six-year-old and how you would handle a parent refusing a treatment. Weight-based dosing safety practices come up in almost every conversation.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a service line or a quality programme the organisation is known for — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost pediatric nurse candidates

• Using "paediatric patients" as a catch-all without ever giving the ages involved
• Leaving PALS off the certification block when it is a standard screening item for child-facing units
• Describing tasks in adult terms, which reads as inexperience to a paediatric hiring manager

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

A registered nurse licence is required, with Paediatric Advanced Life Support expected in most inpatient child-facing settings alongside BLS. The Certified Pediatric Nurse credential is available through the paediatric nursing certification board and is generally preferred. Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification applies in newborn settings specifically.

Where this leads if you get it

General paediatrics into a specialty unit such as paediatric intensive care, oncology or cardiology, then charge, educator or child life liaison roles. A paediatric nurse practitioner route through graduate study is the common advanced step.

Check the licence number and expiry date on both documents before sending, because a lapsed credential ends an application regardless of the letter.
