Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible
Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it spends a sentence saying nothing.
Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number
Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.
Paragraph three: why this employer
This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.
What this field is judging behind the words
Interviews centre on a debugging narrative: a service is slow, you have metrics, logs and traces, walk me through it. Expect cardinality questions, sampling trade-offs and a discussion of what makes an alert worth waking someone for. Because these roles are usually created after a painful outage or an alarming vendor invoice, be ready to talk about both reliability outcomes and ingest economics in the same breath.
Mistakes that cost observability engineer candidates
- Naming vendors without volumes, which leaves the reviewer unable to judge the scale you handled
- Treating alert count as a positive; reducing noisy alerts is the stronger story
- Omitting the developer-adoption side, since half this job is persuading teams to instrument their code
Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.
What this role needs on paper
No certification defines this role and hiring managers rarely ask. CKA is a reasonable signal given how much of the work runs on Kubernetes, and vendor credentials from Grafana or Datadog confirm platform familiarity. Contributions to OpenTelemetry or a widely used exporter carry more weight than any certificate. Prior software engineering experience differentiates most, since much of the job is writing instrumentation.
