Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible

Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it spends a sentence saying nothing.

Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number

Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.

What this field is judging behind the words

Full stack roles concentrate at smaller companies and agencies, where one person is expected to carry a feature from schema to screen. Processes are often shorter than at large product firms: a screen, a take-home or paired session, then a conversation with a founder or lead. Some employers still run a separate front end and back end interview, and candidates who are visibly stronger on one side do better naming that themselves than being caught by it.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost full stack developer candidates

• Listing every framework you have opened, which makes the claim of range look like a claim of shallowness
• Describing only the front end and calling it full stack; name the data model, the queries and the endpoints too
• Skipping the deployment and operations side, which on small teams is usually part of the job you are applying for

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

No certification is expected and none is checked. A computer science degree helps at larger employers and is commonly waived where there is deployed work to point at. Cloud certifications are worth listing only when the posting mentions infrastructure ownership, which on small teams it frequently does. A portfolio of live applications does more here than any credential.

Where this leads if you get it

Full stack developers usually either specialise — moving into front end, back end or platform work as the company grows — or stay generalist and move towards technical lead, first engineer or founding roles at small companies where breadth is the point.
