Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible

Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it spends a sentence saying nothing.

Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number

Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

What this field is judging behind the words

Expect a modelling exercise: given a business domain, design the schema and justify grain, keys and history handling. Interviewers push on trade-offs rather than correctness, and a candidate who cannot articulate why they chose a data vault over a star schema struggles. Later rounds cover governance, ownership and cost. Because architect hires often follow a stalled platform migration, the panel will ask what went wrong on yours.

Mistakes that cost data architect candidates

• Submitting an engineer resume with the title changed; architecture bullets should show decisions and their consequences
• Naming platforms with no volumes, so a reviewer cannot tell whether the estate was 20 tables or 2,000
• Skipping the stakeholder work, which is usually the hardest part of imposing a data model on a business

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

There is no licence, and seniority here is demonstrated far more by delivered platforms than by certificates. Platform certifications such as SnowPro Advanced: Architect or the Google and AWS professional data tracks confirm hands-on currency and are worth listing. A postgraduate qualification helps at some enterprises and is irrelevant at others. Many respected data architects hold nothing beyond a vendor certificate and a decade of shipped models.

Where this leads if you get it

Data engineer or senior BI developer into data architect, then principal or enterprise architect, or head of data platform. Some move into consulting, where migration experience is the marketable asset.
