Paragraph one: certification area and level

Name the position, the school, and your certification area and grade band. Districts run multiple vacancies at once and the letter is often read next to the application form, so being specific about which vacancy you mean prevents your file being read against the wrong one.

Paragraph two: one thing students achieved

Pick a measurable student outcome or a programme you built, and give the cohort size. Panels are looking for evidence that your practice changes results rather than a description of your teaching style, which they will ask about in person anyway.

What this field is judging behind the words

Demand outstrips supply badly, so schools hire from unusual directions: existing teachers adding the subject, and developers entering through alternative routes. Interviews are less about coding depth than about whether you can teach beginners, keep an elective full and grow it into a sequence. Panels commonly include a career and technical education lead, and industry partnership experience carries weight.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a programme the school runs or a community it serves — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost computer science teacher candidates

• Submitting a developer resume with a teaching header on it
• Assuming an industry background substitutes for licensure, when the route into the classroom differs by state
• Listing frameworks a school will never teach instead of the courses on its programme of study

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

Licensure routes for computer science differ more than for any other subject, running through dedicated endorsements in some states and through business, maths or career and technical authorisations in others. A subject examination such as the Praxis computer science test is used in some. Advanced Placement courses need College Board course audit approval. Check the target state directly.
