Paragraph one: the role, and why you are credible

Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then one line establishing that you already do this work. Skip "I am writing to express my keen interest" — it spends a sentence saying nothing.

Paragraph two: one achievement, with a number

Choose the achievement most relevant to the posting rather than the one you are proudest of, and attach a figure: a percentage, an amount, a volume, a timeframe. One specific result beats three general claims and gives the interviewer something concrete to ask about.

What this field is judging behind the words

Interviews usually open with a scenario: an engineer needs cross-account access by Friday, how do you grant it safely. Expect IAM policy reading, a discussion of how you would detect a compromised workload identity, and often a take-home reviewing a deliberately flawed Terraform module. Panels weight collaboration heavily, because an engineer who blocks deploys without offering a path forward is worse than none.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a market they are moving into — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost cloud security engineer candidates

• Listing every security tool in the vendor catalogue when you configured two of them properly
• Reporting scanner output as achievement — "identified 400 findings" is a scan result, not your work
• Hiding the cloud provider until page two, when it is the first filter both the parser and the hiring manager apply

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

This is one of the security specialisms where certification genuinely helps. AWS Certified Security – Specialty and the Azure security associate track map closely to daily work, and CCSP carries weight in regulated buyers. Terraform Associate and CKA signal you can build rather than only assess. Requirements vary sharply by employer: some federal and defence contractors require clearance or specific baseline certifications.

Where this leads if you get it

Typically infrastructure or security analyst into cloud security engineer, then senior, then either cloud security architect or a product security lead role. Some move into detection engineering as estates mature.
