Paragraph one: certification area and level

Name the position, the school, and your certification area and grade band. Districts run multiple vacancies at once and the letter is often read next to the application form, so being specific about which vacancy you mean prevents your file being read against the wrong one.

Paragraph two: one thing students achieved

Pick a measurable student outcome or a programme you built, and give the cohort size. Panels are looking for evidence that your practice changes results rather than a description of your teaching style, which they will ask about in person anyway.

Paragraph three: why this employer

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a programme the school runs or a community it serves — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

What this field is judging behind the words

Centres recruit continuously because ratios must be covered every day, so hiring is fast and reliability is scrutinised heavily. Directors check clearances, immunisation and first aid before a start date, and often run a paid trial shift in the room. Interviews focus on routines, guidance approaches and how you respond to illness or an accident.

Mistakes that cost childcare worker candidates

• Describing the work as babysitting rather than as licensed centre-based care with documented routines
• Omitting the age band, which decides which room you can be placed in
• Leaving clearances and first aid off the page when a director must verify them before hiring

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

Requirements are set by state child care licensing and differ by state and programme type. The Child Development Associate credential is a widely recognised qualification, and CPR, paediatric first aid, mandated reporter training and background clearance are near-universal. Some roles need only clearances plus in-service hours.

Where this leads if you get it

Assistant to lead teacher to room supervisor and centre director, or into a publicly funded preschool programme with further qualifications. The credential you hold, more than years worked, determines which room you can lead.
