Adapting this for a bar manager application
Paragraph one: the venue, the role and your availability
Say which venue and which role, then the service style and volume you are used to, then your availability. Managers hire for the shifts they cannot cover, so availability stated early works in your favour more than it does in any other field.
Paragraph two: volume, and one thing you fixed
Name the covers, rooms or transactions you are used to, then one problem you solved — a section you ran alone, a shift you covered, a cost you cut, a new starter you trained. That is what tells a manager you will be useful in week one.
Paragraph three: why this employer
This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, the venue itself, its menu or its clientele — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.
What this field is judging behind the words
Bar manager interviews split into two halves. One is commercial: pour cost, inventory process, distributor terms and how you priced the list. The other is practical, often a shift behind the bar or a costed menu exercise, because owners want proof you can still work service when a bartender calls out. Compliance questions are near-certain, particularly how you have refused service and how you keep every team member certified and in date.
Mistakes that cost bar manager candidates
- Leading with cocktails and never naming a pour cost or sales figure
- Saying "managed the bar" without team size, so the scale of the job is invisible
- Skipping alcohol server certification, which is required or expected in most states and is checked before a first shift
Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

Alcohol server or seller-server training is required or strongly encouraged in most states, and the approved programme, renewal period and whether managers need a separate certification are all set at state and sometimes county or city level. Texas uses TABC, other states run their own schemes or accept TIPS and ServSafe Alcohol. A food handler or food protection manager certification is usually required where the bar serves food.
