Paragraph one: credential, setting and population

State the role, your licence and its status, and the setting and patient population you work in. A clinical manager is deciding whether you can be oriented onto their unit rather than trained from scratch, and that judgement is made in the first two lines.

Paragraph two: one clinical result you can stand behind

Choose an outcome you can evidence — a patient load carried, a documentation or compliance improvement, a quality measure your unit moved — and be careful to attribute team results as team results. Overstating a clinical outcome is the fastest way to lose credibility with a manager who knows how the work runs.

What this field is judging behind the words

Employers recruit for a particular kind of audiology practice, and the test battery you run signals which one you belong to. Hospital and ENT clinics want diagnostic breadth including electrophysiology and vestibular testing; dispensing practices want fitting volumes, verification discipline and counselling that turns evaluations into fittings. Interviews often include a case discussion and, in dispensing settings, a frank conversation about business expectations.

This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a service line or a quality programme the organisation is known for — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.

Mistakes that cost audiologist candidates

• Writing "performed hearing tests" instead of naming the battery, which is the only way a clinic can judge your diagnostic range
• Omitting real-ear verification, a specific practice standard that dispensing employers look for by name
• Presenting dispensing and diagnostic work as interchangeable when employers recruit for one or the other

Those are resume mistakes, but they apply to the letter for the same reason: both documents are read by someone deciding quickly whether you understand the job.

What this role needs on paper

A doctoral degree in audiology is the entry qualification, followed by a state licence to practise. Dispensing hearing aids is also a licensed activity and may carry separate state requirements. The ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in audiology and board certification through the American Board of Audiology are both voluntary and widely recognised.

Where this leads if you get it

Senior or lead clinician, clinic director, or practice ownership in private settings. Others move into cochlear implant programmes, industry roles with manufacturers, or academic and research positions.

Check the licence number and expiry date on both documents before sending, because a lapsed credential ends an application regardless of the letter.
