My daily practice centres on Ceramics and Kiln Operation, Printmaking and Drawing and Painting Foundations, which lines up with what this position asks for. Paragraph one: certification area and level
Name the position, the school, and your certification area and grade band. Districts run multiple vacancies at once and the letter is often read next to the application form, so being specific about which vacancy you mean prevents your file being read against the wrong one.
Paragraph two: one thing students achieved
Pick a measurable student outcome or a programme you built, and give the cohort size. Panels are looking for evidence that your practice changes results rather than a description of your teaching style, which they will ask about in person anyway.
Paragraph three: why this employer
This is where most letters fail. "I admire your commitment to excellence" could be sent to anyone. Name something real — a product, a recent announcement, how the team works, a programme the school runs or a community it serves — and connect it to your own experience. If you genuinely cannot find anything specific to say, that is worth noticing before you apply.
What this field is judging behind the words
Arts vacancies are few and are often split across buildings or shared between schools, so flexibility about setting matters as much as subject skill. Panels usually include an administrator rather than a subject specialist, which means your portfolio and student work do the explaining. Expect questions on studio safety, budget management and how you would run the programme with the equipment the school already owns.
Mistakes that cost art teacher candidates
- Sending an artist statement in place of a teaching resume
- Naming media generically when the school needs to know if its kiln and press will be used
- Omitting a portfolio link, or giving one that requires an account to view
